Why do organisations need to transform and change?

The need for organisational change is driven by a wide range of reasons.

These include:

  • Changes in the senior leadership team
  • Technological changes and upgrades
  • Changes in business strategy
  • Replacement of outdated working practices and processes
  • The need to cut or trim costs and increase efficiency
  • Challenges resulting from growth, mergers and acquisitions
  • Downturns and tougher operating conditions
  • The need to implement new organisation behaviours and skills
  • The need to develop change and improve organisational culture
  • Government legislation/initiatives

Our experience and research indicates that organisations undergo major change approximately once every three years with smaller changes taking place almost continuously. There are no signs that this pace of change will slow down, indeed with major changes recently affecting whole industries one could be forgiven for thinking that we are currently in the midst of a global transformation affecting businesses and organisations of all sizes.

In this context the need for managers and leaders to be able to introduce and manage transformational change to ensure that organisational objectives are met, and they have to ensure that they gain the commitment of their people, both during and after implementation. Often, at the same time, they also have to ensure that business continues as usual.

For these reasons, it is important that the way change is managed is carefully considered by organisations. Whilst each change situation will be unique, there are still a number of common themes that will help ensure that the change process stands the greatest chance of success.

Change v Transformation?

For many organisations survival requires much more than short term tactical and often trivial change, survival means lasting strategic transformation and this, in turn, requires new information and a fresh perspective, developmental learning and coaching of senior executives and managers by transformational change architects, coaches and leaders – individuals that have a different perspective from the norm – people who can help and coach the CEO to deliver the desired outcomes.
